How to write a brief for a freelancer
What to put in a freelance brief so you get what you need the first time — goal, audience, examples, deliverables, deadline and budget.

Start with the goal
Say what the work is for and what success looks like: more sign-ups, a logo for a shopfront, an article that answers one question.
Describe the audience
Who will see or use the result, where, and in which language. A freelancer who knows the audience makes better choices without asking.
Show examples
Link work you like and work you do not, and say why. Examples remove more ambiguity than any adjective.
List the deliverables
File types, sizes, word counts, the number of revisions, and what you will own when the work is done.
Give the deadline and budget
State the date you need it and your budget. It saves both sides from quoting for a different job.
